Cruising 34 Fleet - C&C 35

A capable cruiser and competitive racer, the C&C 35 III Mojito is the largest boat in our fleet. Mojito was built in 1984, and has been raced on Boston Harbor for the last few seasons. The C&C 35 III is known for her exceptional light air performance and pointing ability, within 40º of true wind. She is also a capable cruiser, with berths for up to 7.

Cruising 30 Fleet - Tartan 30

Tartan 30

The Tartan 30 is a well respected cruiser, known for its sturdy construction and general seaworthiness. With a skeg-hung rudder and overbuilt hull, these boats are capable of some serious offshore sailing, and are truly in their element when the wind picks up. There's room for everyone in the generous cockpit, and the tiller steering saves weight and complexity. The main cabin has ample headroom for most at 6' 1". Our example has been meticulously maintained, and features a recent diesel saildrive engine rather than the standard (and less reliable) Atomic 4.

She is very well appointed above and below deck, making day and overnight sails quite comfortable. BROOMSTICK is a cruiser first, but she's been known to enter a few races in the Boston area.

Cruising 30 Fleet - CS 30

CS 30

Blue Note, our Canadian Seacraft (CS) 30, is a comfortable family boat with a notable turn of speed! As soon as you take the wheel, you’ll understand why she is the most popular 30 footer in our fleet. She races PHRF on Wednesday evenings during the summer, call our front desk to see if there is a position available to crew. The CS30 has an excellent reputation as a robustly built and tastefully finished cruiser better know in the Great Lakes than here in the New England.

Cruising 30 Fleet - O'Day 240

O'Day 240

Courageous added MAINE COURSE to our fleet in 2011. The O'Day 240 is a wonderful day cruiser with a large and comfortable cockpit comparable to that of a much larger boat. She has a furling headsail and a high boom that is well above most heads. Her shallow draft makes her ideal for exploring areas where larger boats can't go. MAINE COURSE is a perfect boat for cruising around Boston Harbor for a few hours, heading to Spectacle for a picnic lunch, or an overnight at World's End.

Overall length 24'6" (7.49m)
Waterline length 20'10" (6.35 m)

Performance Fleet

J80 bw iits a-kite

Performance Fleet

We are so excited to now offer access to two 26’ J/80s in excellent condition. Featuring comfortable open cockpits, roller furling jibs, asymmetrical spinnakers, and light displacement planing hulls, these boats are easy to operate and built to move. And they're equally good for a comfortable daysail around the harbor islands as for a race around the buoys.

All Performance fleet members must have a Courageous Green Flag rating and pass a rigorous on-the-water J/80 checkout; please see our Flag Ratings section, especially "Green Flag for Cruising Members," for more information.  Unless you have extensive sportboat and asym. spinnaker experience, plan on taking Basic Sportboat to qualify for membership, and Advanced Sportboat for your spinnaker endorsement.

Typically, J/80s will not be available to race in outside regattas without a Courageous staff member present.

We are looking to add more J/80s to the fleet, and expect our membership options and access to racing opportunities to evolve as we add more capacity.

Cruising Fleet

broomstick cruising lesson

Cruising Fleet

For some of us, it's all about the big boats, backup engines, and thoughts of sailing around the world. Our cruising fleet won't take you quite that far, but it will take you around Boston Harbor and then some. Whether you want to invite friends and family for trips around the Harbor Islands, anchor for a picnic lunch, spend a night moored or at anchor under the stars, or practice your big boat skills in preparation for a bareboat trip in the Caribbean, we've got a convenient cruising membership option for you.

Our cruising grounds are generally contained to Boston Harbor. Typically members spend the night moored off the Harbor Islands or dockside in Hull.  We carefully limit our available cruising memberships to just six members per boat to ensure that everyone has plenty of access.  Cruising members may take overnight trips for up to 3 days / 2 nights.  We limit all members to two standing reservations at any one time to ensure fair and equal access.

All cruising members will need to have a check-out and orientation for each boat they will be sailing; please see our Flag Ratings section, especially "Green Flag for Cruising Members," for more information.

Cruising Fleet 30/34

(Includes access to Rhodes 19, J/22, and J/24 fleets)

The Courageous cruising fleet is growing and improving every year, with boats ranging from 24 to 34 feet. Currently on our dock are an O'Day 240, a Tartan 27 yawl, an Ericson 28, a CS 30, and a Pearson 34; we're likely to add to the fleet by the 2016 season. We offer two classes of memberships. Cruising 30 members may take the 24-30 footers for day trips and overnights; Cruising 34 membership includes the Pearson 34 as well.

If you're new to the Courageous cruising fleet or looking to bump up to a higher membership level than you've previously had, please contact us before purchasing online.  Priority is given to returning cruising members at each level.

Holiday Courses Home

Courses-Holiday-Header

Courses, Private Lessons, and Private Charters

Whether it’s your first time on a boat or you have years of experience under your belt, when it comes to sailing there’s always more to learn.

We offer a wide range of courses, led by expert US Sailing certified instructors. Our classes are extremely hands-on and are kept small (usually no more than three students in the boat with an instructor) for a highly individualized learning experience. While our group classes are geared towards adults (18+), we are more than happy to set up private lessons for families or individuals of any age and experience level. You do not need to be a Courageous member to take a course. If our regularly set courses do not work with your schedule, we’ll be glad to arrange private lessons or match you up with other students with similar schedule requirements.
