J80 bw iits a-kite

Performance Fleet

We are so excited to now offer access to two 26’ J/80s in excellent condition. Featuring comfortable open cockpits, roller furling jibs, asymmetrical spinnakers, and light displacement planing hulls, these boats are easy to operate and built to move. And they're equally good for a comfortable daysail around the harbor islands as for a race around the buoys.

All Performance fleet members must have a Courageous Green Flag rating and pass a rigorous on-the-water J/80 checkout; please see our Flag Ratings section, especially "Green Flag for Cruising Members," for more information.  Unless you have extensive sportboat and asym. spinnaker experience, plan on taking Basic Sportboat to qualify for membership, and Advanced Sportboat for your spinnaker endorsement.

Performance memberships are only available as Full memberships, and include guest privileges, coverage for damage due to normal wear and tear,* and access to the Rhodes 19, J/22, and J/24 fleets (after passing on-the-water checkouts).  Of course, cruising members also get to enjoy all the Courageous membership perks: barbecues, racing, fireworks-watching parties, moonlight sails, Harbor Island camping trips, and discounts on courses, private lessons (50% off!), and Gill apparel.  As a Courageous member, you'll be part of an enthusiastic, inclusive community of sailors...and you'll be helping Courageous provide free and low-cost sailing opportunities for Boston kids.

Please note that our J/80s will be participating in the Constitution Yacht Club’s Wednesday night PHRF racing series and occasional weekend regattas with a Courageous instructor aboard.  Racing access is available to all Courageous members and youth program students.  Though space is limited, J/80 members have priority access and can participate at no extra charge. Typically, J/80s will not be available to race in outside regattas without a Courageous staff member present.

We are looking to add more J/80s to the fleet, and expect our membership options and access to racing opportunities to evolve as we add more capacity.

Cruising Fleet

For some of us, it's all about the big boats, backup engines, and thoughts of sailing around the world. Our cruising fleet won't take you quite that far, but it will take you around Boston Harbor and then some. Whether you want to invite friends and family for trips around the Harbor Islands, anchor for a picnic lunch, spend a night moored or at anchor under the stars, or practice your big boat skills in preparation for a bareboat trip in the Caribbean, we've got a convenient cruising membership option for you.

Our cruising grounds are generally contained to Boston Harbor. Typically members spend the night moored off the Harbor Islands or dockside in Hull.  We carefully limit our available cruising memberships to just six members per boat to ensure that everyone has plenty of access.  Cruising members may take overnight trips for up to 3 days / 2 nights.  We limit all members to two standing reservations at any one time to ensure fair and equal access.

All cruising members will need to have a check-out and orientation for each boat they will be sailing; please see our Flag Ratings section, especially "Green Flag for Cruising Members," for more information.

Cruising Fleet 30/34

(Includes access to Rhodes 19, J/22, and J/24 fleets)

The Courageous cruising fleet is growing and improving every year, with boats ranging from 24 to 34 feet. Currently on our dock are an O'Day 240, a Tartan 27 yawl, an Ericson 28, a CS 30, and a Pearson 34; we're likely to add to the fleet by the 2016 season. We offer two classes of memberships. Cruising 30 members may take the 24-30 footers for day trips and overnights; Cruising 34 membership includes the Pearson 34 as well.

If you're new to the Courageous cruising fleet or looking to bump up to a higher membership level than you've previously had, please contact us before purchasing online.  Priority is given to returning cruising members at each level.

Please note: Year-long Core Fleet memberships run from May 1 through October 31, or for one calendar year if purchased after May 1. Members must pass an on-the-water checkout and written test in order to sail a Courageous boat without an instructor; please see our Flag Ratings section for more information. An on-the-water checkout is required for each type of boat sailed; typically, as boat size increases, so does Courageous's expectation for seamanship and skill level. Our sailing area extends out around the Harbor Islands for qualified members. Courageous is open noon-sunset on weekdays and 10-sunset on weekends and holidays, May 1 through October 31. Boat availability is usually plentiful (except before 3:30 on weekdays during the 6 weeks of our summer Youth Program), but is not guaranteed. A small additional fee may be charged for some member activities. All memberships include coverage of damage caused by normal wear and tear; members are financially responsible for damage due to negligence or errors in boathandling or judgement.

 One-Day Membership

Our One-Day membership option, similar to a boat rental, is perfect for experienced sailors who are looking for a little time on the water without a longer commitment. In order to take out one of our Rhodes 19s or J22s, we'll need to schedule a quick on-the-water checkout (including a crew overboard recovery drill and docking under sail) with one of our instructors, which you may do in advance or on the day you go sailing. A One-Day membership gives you access to Boston's inner harbor, and can last for a few hours or the whole day--it's up to you!
