Waterfront Operations and Receptions Coordinator

Job Description

The Waterfront Operations & Reception Coordinator is one of the most important positions at Courageous Sailing. They are the front of the organization, serving as the first point of contact for the public, either personally or over the phone, and will be a primary resource for our students and members. They must be friendly, polite, and knowledgeable of the rules, regulations, and operations of Courageous.  
 
The Waterfront Coordinator controls access to directors and other staff, handles administrative tasks such as scheduling and data entry, manages the daily flow of people and boats through the program, monitors our radios, marine traffic, weather, and wind.  They must be highly organized, have great people skills, and be able to multi-task in a sometimes hectic, fast-paced environment. 
 

Qualifications

The Waterfront Coordinator position is a full time, seasonal position starting May 1st, with hours tapering off in October.  Season ends October 31st.   Candidates must be able to work weekends, and some days during the week.  
 
Minimum qualifications include:
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently, mulit-task, prioritize responsibilities, take initiative, and appropriately handle confident information.
  • Ability to work fluidly with staff from all departments.
  • Comfortable working under pressure, exercizing strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to adapt to changing program needs.
  • Skilled at monitoring and managing multiple information feeds simultaneously.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Bachelors Degree preferred.
  • Familiarity with basic computer systems, social networking programs.
  • Ability to quickly and enthusiastically master additional technology, skills, & knowledge as needed

Keelboat Instructor

 

Job Description

We are currently seeking experienced keelboat, cruising, navigation and racing instructors to join our instructor team for the 2012 season, which runs from May 1 to October 31. Most adult program classes run on the weekends and weekday evenings.

Job Description

If you love working around boats and people and want to join our staff, then we want to hear from you! We have many seasonal positions available from May 1st through October 31st.

Daily staff responsibilities include:

    • Opening and closing the boathouse and dock - hours are 10am - sunset on weekends and holidays and 11am - sunset on weekdays
    • Managing Front Desk operations: check members out/in, monitor VHF radios, understand and be able to sell lessons, programs etc to prospective clients
    • Tending the dock: helping boats depart and arrive
    • Give 2 hour lessons and private cruises

We offer training, however some sailing experience is required for most roles.

Administrative Assistant & Parent Liason

 

Job Description

This individual reports directly to the Youth Program Director.  This position is primarily office work.  This position is available from mid-March 2013 through August 31, 2013.

The position is approximately 20-25 hours per week (M-F) from mid-March through mid-May.  The position is approximately 35-40 hours per week (M-F) from mid-May through the end of August.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Human Resources/Personnel

  • Organize and updates all personnel files
  • Create New Hire and Re-Hire paperwork packets, updating with any new requirements (e.g. New W-4 form)
  • Schedule paperwork processing appointments and ensure documentation compliance for 90+ seasonal employees: update I-9 Forms, Work Permits (minors), Parental Consent, Sailing and First Aid Certifications, etc.
  • Process all background checks (CORI & SORI) for all new and re-hires, current staff & volunteers
  • Work with Youth Program Director to ensure that Boston teens comply with requirements of various employment programs (e.g. Boston Youth Fund, MLK Summer Scholars)
  • Timecards: act as key point person to follow up on any missed punches; follow up with staff to ensure they track time worked via login/phone system (for many this is their first job)

    Youth Programs Support

    • Assist youth program director in processing summer program applications, scholarship applications and tuition payments
    • Lead follow-up with families of students regarding missing documentation and payments
    • Field calls from parents during the application process and during the Summer Youth Program in support of Youth Program Director
    • Maintain contact database
    • Complete reminder calls to students prior to each new session
    • Help Maintain Youth Program Blog
    • Lead planning of mid-season and end-of-season family celebration nights

     

    Other

    • Assist with planning and execution of events as necessary
    • General support of Youth Program Director for any special projects, mailings, calls, visit Youth Program Site,  as needed
    • Support any other projects as needed by Youth Program, Adult Program, special events, etc.

    Step 5: Head Instructor Trainer

     

    Job Description

    The Head Instructor Trainer is primarily responsible for overseeing the Courageous Instructor-in-Training (IIT) Program. Please note that if funding allows, we may hire up to three or four Instructor Trainers for two separate IIT programs.  In each case, there will be one Head Instructor and an Assistant. Responsibilities and qualifications for each position are similar.

    The IIT program is a rigorous two-summer-long job-skills training course that trains 15-to-18-year-old sailing students to become master sailors and skilled sailing instructors. The class typically consists of 12 to 18 students, and the curriculum focuses on topics including: advanced seamanship, boating safety, classroom management, public speaking, lesson planning, and techniques in sailing instruction. The course is similar to a US Sailing Level 1 or Basic Keelboat instructor course, but over the course of two summers covers that material in much greater depth.

    Assistant Racing Coach

     

    Job Description

    Our Team Leaders and Assistant Coaches (or “Senior Instructors”) are our talented and versatile mid-level instructors. They are employed at all three sites to work with our youngest sailors in our Learn-to-Sail, Advanced Sailing, Racing and Cruising.  They report directly to their respective Step Leaders.  Senior instructors typically have 1-2 years previous instructing experience, but do not necessarily have experience leading a class on their own.

    Senior instructors must be team players and strong role models, capable of motivating and mentoring Courageous’ youngest sailors, as well as instilling within them a deep respect for Courageous’ boats, the ocean environment and for one another.  They are also responsible for creating a fun and positive atmosphere, one that gets students excited about hopping in the boats and getting out on the water all summer long!  As safety boat drivers, they are also directly responsible for monitoring and ensuring the safety of our students.

    The ideal senior instructor would specialize in teaching a certain course at a certain site all summer long, but, in a pinch, would also be capable of filling in for other staff members teaching other courses.  As Senior Instructors are encouraged to apprentice with our Step Leaders and Coaches, this position is particularly suited to individuals interested in advancing through the instructor ranks at Courageous and in becoming assistant or head coaches.

    Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to: helping to plan and run classes; teaching students and new instructors to respect boats and equipment, and reporting damage and breakdowns when they occur; teaching students about the environment and leadership in addition to the fundamentals of sailing from within the sailboat; helping to maintain and clean the docks, boats and grounds; participation in regular staff skill-building clinics.

    Step 4 Racing

    (Charlestown Only)

    The assistant racing coach’s primary responsibility is to oversee and facilitate the day-to-day operation of the Charlestown racing program.  He/She reports to the Head Racing Coach.

    The Assistant Racing Coach must bring to the Step4/Racing program a passion for racing, and a level of energy and enthusiasm that will motivate his/her students and staff, as well as inspire younger students in the lower rungs of the Courageous program to want to join the racing program.  The Assistant Racing Coach must also be sensitive to the needs of his/her individual students, while setting up the Courageous Racing Team for success at the local, regional and national levels of racing.

    Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to: sailing with students to fine tune their boat handling; making sure all equipment for the class (specifically the 420 fleet) is cared for and well-maintained; preparing racing team members to participate in local, regional and national regattas; occasionally leading classes if the Head and/or Assistant Racing Coach are away at regattas.

    Requirements

      • Current US Sailing Level 1 Small Boat Instructor certification, equivalent, or more advanced
      • 1-2 years experience teaching sailing
      • Racing experience in local junior events, preferably in 420s or Lasers as a member of a high school or college team
      • Willingness to work occasional weekends to help coach at local regattas
      • Current First Aid/CPR certification
      • Passing sailing check out with Head Racing Coach or Youth Director

    Instructor-In-Training Program (IIT)

     

    Job Description

    The IIT program is an intensive job-training program designed to take young sailors from student to instructor during an eight-week summer session.  Full completion of the IIT program typically takes two summers.  This program will help you master your sailing skills, build your confidence on the water and as a leader, bring together you and your peers as a formidable sailing instruction team.  The IIT program will also prepare you for the industry-standard US Sailing Level 1 instructor certification course by introducing you to some basic instruction techniques and giving you the opportunity to apply them by helping to teach the Courageous Step 1/2 Programs at all three of our sites!

    Returning IIT's

    If you hope to return for a second summer of the IIT program in 2013, you must reapply.  No essay is necessary; however you will be asked to come to Courageous for an interview and sailing test sometime in March of 2013.  Click here to fill out the Returning Instructor-in-Training information update form.  Please complete by March 1, 2013, or your chances of losing a spot to a new applicant will be greatly increased.  Thank you!

    Prospective IITs

    To meet the requirements for entering the 2013 IIT program, you must:

      • Be 15-years-old before July 1, 2013;

      • Have successfully completed a full session of either Cruising or Racing in 2012, or its equivalent

    (Important: If you have not completed this course and would still like to be considered for the Courageous IIT Program, please contact the youth program director immediately; in 2013 this may not necessarily exclude you from becoming an IIT)

      • Obtain a current First/Aid CPR certification (Note:IITs areresponsible for covering the cost of their own certification; Courageous may host a pre-season First/Aid CPR if enough IITs are interested)

    Jamaica Pond Boathouse Manager/Front Desk

    Job Description

    The Site Director/Office Manager’s primary responsibility is to oversee and facilitate the day-to-day operation of the Jamaica Pond program. This individual reports to and will work closely with the Youth Program Director. He/She will act as Courageous’ primary liaison between the Courageous JP staff, the
    Charlestown office staff, the City Parks Department and the members of the general public who also utilize the pond and boathouse outside of youth program hours.
     
    Specific daily responsibilities include but are not be limited to: scheduling staff for daily, special programs, and lesson coverage; ensuring that lessons proceed on-time; planning and conducting weekly meetings with site staff; monitoring weather conditions; ensuring that the boats and grounds are tidy at the end of each day; opening and closing the site; checking in daily with the youth program director via telephone; maintaining a cash register and balance books; and assisting the youth program director in organization of materials and curricula for leadership and environmentally focused lessons.
     
    The Spring Site Director is also strongly encouraged to lead efforts to further engage the Jamaica Pond community at our site, whether it be through developing new programs, increasing marketing efforts regarding lessons and racing nights, or maintaining physical or online community posting boards.

    Requirements:

      • Background in educational or non-profit program management, specifically youth programs related to sailing or outdoor education
      • Strong preference for substantial sailing or general boating experience.  If applicant does not possess these skills from the outset they must be at least in physically strong condition (able to lift 50 lbs.), not be averse to working in inclement weather conditions, and have the capacity to learn quickly.
      • Current First Aid/CPR certification
      • Flexible thinker and problem-solver; willingness and ability to independently take initiative
      • An enthusiastic self-starter with strong work ethic and attention to detail
