Environmental Education: Step Green!Courageous collaborates with Save the Harbor/Save the Bay and Sailor's for the Sea to teach our students an active respect for the waters on which they sail and the surrounding ecosystem, Students learn about the many organisms and natural resources of Boston Harbor and, under the guidance of our instruction team, initiate beach clean-ups, water quality testing, and other activities to help protect some of our city's most precious environmental treasures. The Green BoatWe've collaborated with educators at Boston's Save the Harbor/Save the Bayto bring Step 3: Intermediate students a whole new way to interactively learn about the Boston Harbor environment. In 2008, we created the Green Boat toteach environmental science while using the sailboat as our classroom.Twice a week on average, students wouldsail with a SH/SB educator and preform water quality test, use Secchi disks, tow for plankton, and monitor local tern colonies, among other exciting activities. To read more about summer environmental programs with SH/SB, visit www.savetheharbor.org.
Clean RegattasIn 2008, the annual Courageous-hosted Rhodes-19 Junior Nationals Regatta was certified as a bronze-level Clean Regatta. This year, Courageous is hoping to achieve silver status for all of its races! Let's keep it green! Courageous is working with Boston-based Sailors for the Sea to clean up our act and get certified. Visit www.sailorsforthesea.org for more information about their heroic efforts to band sailors together and green the seas. |
