Sportboat/Cruising Coach

Reports to: Site Director and Youth Program Director
Status: Seasonal, Full-Time

Description:

The sportboat/cruising coach works with a group of up to 6 Step 4 students. Step 4 is a combination of dinghy sailing on 420s, RS Quests, and Lasers, and performance cruising in our J/80s. Students focusing on cruising will be learning how to handle a sportboat, tweak sail controls for maximum performance, fly an asymmetrical spinnaker, and navigate safely in Boston Harbor. The sportboat/cruising coach will also serve as a resource for the Instructors-in-Training trainers.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead Courageous J/80 sportboat programming for Step 4 students and Instructors-in-Training.
  • Assist Step 4 Head Instructor and IIT Trainers in the development of lesson plans and float plans for each session
  • Prepare lessons for days when sailing is not possible
  • Lead and facilitate chalk talks
  • Organize student and staff participation in Wednesday night PHRF racing series
  • Help lead chores at the end of each day
  • Attend 3-day senior staff training and all 5 days of staff orientation
  • Attend staff meetings
  • Be a constructive and friendly member of the Courageous team
  • Maintain a fun, positive, friendly atmosphere for your students
  • Instill a sense of respect and safety for the Courageous fleet, Boston Harbor, and for each person

Qualifications:

  • Extensive J80 or comparable sportboat sailing and racing experience
  • 2-3 years coaching experience
  • US Sailing Keelboat Instructor or equivalent certification
  • USCG license preferred
  • Racing experience and knowledge of the Racing Rules of Sailing
  • Completion of NASBLA-approved safety boat course through the MA Environmental Police and/or through the US Sailing Level I certification course
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification
  • Positive and enthusiastic attitude
  • Outstanding communication and team management skills
  • Excellent references
  • A passion for sailing, the ocean, and working with kids

Senior Staff Training: June 22-24
All Staff Training: June 27-July 1
Monday-Friday 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM, from Tuesday, July 5 – Friday, August 19
