What Do I Get To Do?

Summer Programs

At Courageous, sailing is just the beginning! You'll also learn about the environment and do all sorts of fun activities while perfecting your skills:

  • Sailing Lessons

  • Our Five Step Program will teach you everything you need to know.
  • Step Green

  • From our home-grown mussel farm to using crab traps and otter trawls, you'll learn all about our local marine ecology.

Courageous kids Save the Harbor!

In 2002, Courageous Sailing Center established a partnership with Save the Harbor/Save the Bay (SHSB), a public-interest environmental advocacy group whose mission is "to protect Boston Harbor and Massachusetts Bay and keep them clean forever." To promote this goal, SHSB has helped us to incorporate a hands-on environmental curriculum throughout our entire Youth Program.

What does this mean for the kids at Courageous?
You'll learn all about the Boston Harbor ecosystem while you sail, plus we'll be running environmental activities all summer long!

Step Green
Thanks to our partnership with Save the Harbor/Save the Bay, we have integrated a new environmental component into our Five Step program.

Why environmental programming?
We at Courageous and SHSB think it is important to promote in our kids a sense of stewardship for the Boston Harbor.

How does it work?
Students in each step of our sailing program will have the chance to explore our local marine ecology with hands-on activities and sailing trips!

  • Visit environmental destinations such as the Harbor Islands and endangered species colonies.

  • Watch sea-life in action on our home-grown mussel farm.
  • Learn about modern and historical uses of the harbor as you take a harbor tour on your very first day at Courageous!
  • Use fishing nets, lines, crab traps, lobster pots, and otter trawls to pull up fish, plankton, crustaceans, maybe even an old boot or two!

Summer Partner Programs: Stay All Day!

If you live in Boston, check out the activities you could do before or after your sailing lesson through our community partners!

Harbor Week
After your morning classes in July, join us for 5 afternoons of Harbor explorations and field trips! You'll get to:

  • Fish on the pier
  • Go on an Inner Harbor cruise
  • Go deep sea fishing

  • Tour Georges Island

  • Maybe even go on a whale watch!

Please call 617-242-3821 x12 for more information.

Harbor Explorers
A hands on look at the under water environment of Boston Harbor! Learn to set lobster pots, identify friendly jellyfish, and maybe even catch a fish for dinner. Join our experienced environmental educators on the dock every day after the Youth Program for an interactive exploration of the water and the life it supports. You’ll use tools like fishing rods, lobster pots, touch tanks, dip nets, plankton drags, to understand more about life under the surface. In this program, you’ll:

  • cut bait for crab and lobster traps
  • set up pyramid crab traps
  • fish with crab lines

  • set up cage lobster traps

  • understand how the crabs and lobsters get caught

  • bait and cast a fishing pole

  • reel in fish

  • catch and release fish without harming them

  • identify the crabs, lobsters, fish, and other creatures you’ve caught

Tennis Lessons
Dorchester-Tenacity
If you sail with us in Dorchester, spend half the day in August with Tenacity. This summer tennis program is available for Boston youth between the ages of 7 and 15. The program focuses on basic instruction, league play, and the opportunity to participate in a citywide competition at the annual Mayor's Cup Tournament in August. Rackets will be provided.

Spring & Fall High School Sailing Program

Our Fall 2005 High School Sailing Program ran from mid-September through the end of October. Eight students from Charlestown High School participated in a brand new work/sail program. The students split their time at Courageous between training/competition and work. Not only were the part of an exciting athletic team with other students, but they also learned valuable job skills.

Check out these pictures to see the team in action!

Spring & Fall After-School Sailing

  • Want to build your basic skills so you can join the summer racing class next year?
  • How about learning to read a chart and navigating around the harbor islands?
  • Come to after-school sailing and see if you can make the jump from learn-to-sail-er to advanced sailor!
