Course Description

This three-weeks long program is a great way to introduce your child to Boston's waterways. The program is designed to build students' confidence around water, knowledge of water and boating safety, and appreciation of the natural environment.

As part of our Summer Sailing School, we operate two other summer programs: the Summer Learning Project (SLP) and SwimSailScience (SSS). Both programs specifically target Boston Public School students identified as being at risk for summer learning loss. The students in these programs receive transportation, two meals each day, and lessons in swimming, sailing, and science, all at no cost to their families. No prior sailing or swimming experience is necessary for students to attend. Unlike our "Step" programs, students must be referred by their schools in order to register. Past Boston Public School partners for the Summer Learning Project have included the Harvard-Kent, Warren-Prescott, Adams, Haley, and Young Achievers.

Note: Registration for the 2014 Summer Learning Project is closed. Registration for the 2014 Swim Sail Science program will be conducted at select Boston Publics Schools. Please return to this website in February 2014 for more information on which schools we will be working with.

Program Fees & Scholarship Eligibility

Scholarship Eligibility & Application

Our course fees are set on a "sliding scale" based upon a family's Annual Household Income or the Adjusted Gross Income.  See below tables describing the fees and sliding-scale for each course.

The registration and lottery process for admitance to the Courageous Sailing Summer youth programs is “Need-Blind.” This means that admission, in no respect, is based on ability to pay. Scholarships are readily available for all who qualify. Extenuating circumstances are always taken into consideration should a family choose to share them with our staff. All financial and personal information is kept confidential.

Important
Payment for 2014 need not be made until after enrollment confirmations have been sent in April.

Step 5: Instructor Training

The IIT program is an intensive job-training program designed to take young sailors from student to instructor during an eight-week summer session.  Full completion of the IIT program typically takes two summers.  This program will help you master your sailing skills, build your confidence on the water and as a leader, bring together you and your peers as a formidable sailing instruction team.  The IIT program will also prepare you for the industry-standard US Sailing Level 1 instructor certification course by introducing you to some basic instruction techniques and giving you the opportunity to apply them by helping to teach the Courageous Step 1/2 Programs at all three of our sites!
