At Courageous, safety is far and above the most important theme taught at the
Center. From the initial safety instruction received prior to boarding the boats to the constant reinforcement of safety procedures and principles, Courageous works to develop the pervasive mindset that a safe sailor is a good sailor. A rigorous safety program has given Courageous one of the best safety records on the harbor
- No one is allowed through the dock gate without a life jacket which must be worn at all times.
- Instructors are either US Sailing Instructor Certified or if under 18 have exceeded the requirements for US Sailing Instructors.
- A Professional Instructor is always on duty to supervise operations.
- A safety launch accompanies all classes with two launches on "engine-running" stand-by at the Courageous pier.
- Our student-to-instructor ratio is 3:1 - one of the highest in the industry.
- All launches are equipped with VHF radios for quick coordination with each other, the Clubhouse, and if necessary the Boston Harbor Police and US Coast Guard.
- Courageous has a conservative foul weather policy with boats being recalled or kept at the dock in bad weather. Forecasts are monitored constantly.
- All participants in the program must be able to swim at least 75 yards.
