Tailgate Party~ May 19, 2007

The College Bowl is a daylong racing event, culminating in a tailgate party on Pier 4 in the Charlestown Navy Yard.

Sailing teams in 2007 include:

Bates College

Harvard University

New Hampshire College

Ohio State University

University of Vermont

Remember, anyone can attend the Tailgate Party.

This event is fun for sailors and those who have never sailed a day in their life:

- For those who sail, teams of two to four people get together and sponsor a boat ($450.00 suggested sponsorship). Funds are collected in a "walk-a-thon style". All proceeds go to support free youth sailing programs at Courageous. Participation in the racing allows you access to the tailgate party as well.

- For those who do not sail, the party starts around 1:30 and runs till 6:00 pm. Tickets are 25.00 per person and this entitles you to an afternoon enjoying the beautiful views of Boston Harbor, a catered meal, and Harpoon beer, all set to a youthful musical beat.

Many who come to the tailgate party do not even know anyone racing but the tailgate party is a perfect way to celebrate with those who do race.

In 2006, the College Bowl regatta and tailgate party raised over $30,000 for the free youth sailing programs at Courageous.

How to participate in the racing:

Traditionally each team races as an unofficial representative of their alma mater, though on many occasions not all team members attend the college that the team captain attended.

There are two ways to participate you can either:

pay for the entry on your own, or
ask friends and family members to "sponsor" your entry.

Most College Bowl participants pay the entry fee through the "sponsorship” method. This method is much like a "walk-a-thon", here is how it works:

There are two ways to collect pledges:

On-Line Sponsorship

Bryan will help you set your team up with a fundraising webpage. This webpage allows others to sponsor your boat through a secure web-connection.

You can place your own photos on your team's webpage. It can be as simple or elaborate as you like. Note that sponsorships of check and cash can also be made through you or by their mailing the sponsorship to Courageous. Just remember to tell them to place a note with the check, if they mail it to Courageous, that states which team they are sponsoring.

When your page is complete, you will send an e-mail to friends, family, and colleagues asking them to log onto your College Bowl page and to sponsor your boat. Courageous has a template e-mail for this purpose and you can choose to use this e-mail, edit it as you wish or use an e-mail you write yourself.

Then sit back and watch as the pledges roll in. Though some may have to send the e-mail multiple times or make phone calls to those who are not as technologically savvy.

Remember to bring this form and sponsorship donations with you on the day of the College Bowl Regatta.

You must contact Bryan and let him know you are collecting sponsorships to participate in the event so we have a boat ready for you on the day of the regatta.
