SAILOR Award: Rich Wilson successfully completed the 2008–09 Vendée Globe around-the-world yacht race in March 2009 in his 60-foot, single-hull sloop Great American III. A single-handed, nonstop unassisted sailing marathon that is held every four years, the Vendée Globe is considered "the most grueling and dangerous prolonged competition on the planet". During his voyage he was able to turn his adventure into an on-line learning experience reaching about 250,000 students. Mr. Wilson also is the founder of sitesALIVE!, a non-profit whose mission is to connect students with sailing adventures that inspire learning across multiple disciplines.
