Summer Arts Weekend on Boston Harbor

Our first Summer Arts Weekend, in conjunction with Summer on the Waterfront Boston, was a lot of fun!  Passersby joined Courageous members and students in trying their hand at boatbuilding, contributing to a piece of sidewalk-chalk art, and checking out local artists at work.  A few lucky participants even got to go out for their first sail ever!

I got to go back to my roots as an art teacher by masterminding a giant compass rose “mandala,” which we all had a great time decorating.   A big shout out to Albert, for his most excellent sea monster, and to James, for volunteering to help out!  Check out this stop-action video of the project, and these photos of sidewalk-chalk artists leaving their mark.

Participants had a hands-on chance to learn about the craft of boatbuilding, led by John Rowse and his team from Boston Family Boat Building, who brought over a 10-foot skiff in progress.  Boston Family Boat Building has amazing programs for kids, but clearly, adults enjoy the process too!

Artists from the Artists Group of Charlestown took the opportunity to paint some fabulous views of Boston from Pier 4.  Here’s Michael Dean working on his view of the Coast Guard cutter Eagle.  Cindy Sorenson, a sailor and painter, got started on a beautiful watercolor painting.  Russ Bolt, a longtime friend of Courageous, was on hand to photograph the event.  Make sure to come by City Square Park in Charlestown for Art in the Park on Saturday, September 7!
